Studying Family Systems Theories Over The Past Two Semesters

While studying family systems theories over the past two semesters, I discovered, that all methods demonstrate validity and success, some models speak more thoroughly to my therapeutic style. The methods that I related to the most are Solution-Focused and Strategic Therapy. Both techniques focus on the client’s strengths and not the pathology of the problem. MRI strategic practices and techniques influenced the creators of Solution-Focused Therapy, Steve De Shazer, and his colleagues. Both approaches have the ability to address family and individual problems in a brief time frame. MRI delivers a comprehensive coverage of theory while SFT delivers a comprehensive coverage of approach (Zola, 2007). MRI believes that problems are not individually based, but instead are sustained by feedback loops and failed attempted solutions that are maintaining the problem (Cade, 1980). An MRI therapist does not define healthy or normal families; therefore asymptomatic families are viewed as a family or individual that has functioning feedback loops. When a problem behavior increases and becomes more disruptive, the family system applies positive feedback to calm the problem. However, the feedback provided, or â€Å"solution†, as it called, may be the incorrect solution for the problem. In turn, the feedback can either exacerbate the problem or create a new more severe issue (Rohrbaugh Shoham, 2001).
